A Response
I get inspired by the poems I read. This time, by Maya Angelou. She was phenomenal. I did not want to move away from her original poem, hence the first line of almost all my stanzas, gives attribute to her poem. I’ve named it “A Response”...my response to Madam Angelou’s poem.
I know why the caged bird sings
It sings because it longs to be heard
To be touched, loved
To be set free
Its song is a distant hum
A cry of anguish
Of sorrow
It sings because it longs for a better tomorrow
I know why the caged bird sings
She sings because she’s heard of the one
The one who is and is to come
The beginning and the end
Alpha and Omega
I know why the caged bird sings
She sings because she is broken
Hurt by those she loved
By this world she once called home
All she has now is her song
A broken record
I know why the caged bird sings
She sings for freedom
She sings to The One who has set her free
Free from her unseen bars
She spreads her wings
And rises.
